Have you ever heard of the uncanny valley hypothesis?
It is a term used in aesthetics to describe the idea that we feel revulsion towards human replicas that are eerily to close to us.
While this animatronic sculpture created by artist Jordan Wolfson isn’t quite identical to us, it most definitely falls into uncanny valley territory. He began working on his creation when he moved to Los Angeles in 2013, and he calls it the “The Dancer,” or “The Female Figure.”
It is supposed to communicate a woman’s experience of being looked at and objectified, but it does a better job at freaking me out. Its eyes are even designed to follow the viewers whenever they walk, and he whispers with the artist’s voice.
