Did you forget to DVR the 37th Annual Key West World Championship this week? Don’t worry, we got you. We’ve got the craziest moment from the offshore powerboat race this week. Super Boat International races feature some of the fastest and largest offshore powerboats in the world that have four engines capable of producing more than 6,000 horsepower and neck-snapping speeds of up to 200 mph.
The cockpit of a superboat contains a driver to steer the ship and a throttleman to make sure the boat doesn’t go too fast and flip. These blistering fast vessels are like the F-16s of the seas. With high waves and wake from other speeding boats, things can get scary. Incredibly scary, like it did this week in Key West.
During the second day of the Key West World Championship on Thursday, there was a frightening crash and it was all captured on video. One of the race boats literally climbed the back of another powerboat. The angled rear of the boat acted like a ramp and catapulted the oncoming boat several feet into the air. After going airborne for a few seconds the high-flying boat crashed down into the water of the harbor and flipped.
Thankfully both the driver and throttleman were uninjured and nobody else was hurt. Damn, who knew boat racing was so crazy.
